The 2010 NRL Grand Finals

September 27th, 2010

The 2010 NRL Grand Finals are upon us.  The top two teams have been named after a thrilling third week of NRL Finals action, starting with the Gold Coast Titans and Sydney Roosters.

The Roosters have returned this year in stunning fashion.  They hit the grounds hard, immediately gaining the upper hand in this match thanks to a couple of tries from right winger Sam Perrett.  The two teams went into the half break with the 12-6 score favouring the Roosters.  But, they weren’t anywhere near stopping.

Daniel Conn furthered the Sydney lead with a fortunate try in the opening minutes of the second half.  Conn took advantage of a lucky bounce to crash over the line and put the score at 18-6.  Braith Anasta took his eight try of the season to put the Roosters at 24-6, and Frank-Paul Nuuausala sealed the team’s place in the 2010 NRL Grand Finals with the final try of the match.  The victory made history for the Sydney team, as they became the first in more than 70 years to go from Wooden Spooners to 2010 NRL Grand Finals contenders.

The NRL Finals action continued on Saturday with the St George Dragons and Wests Tigers. From the start, the match looked like it was going to be a repeat of the 2005 Preliminary Final between these two rivals as the Wests Tigers jumped out ahead early on.  In fact, they went into the second half with a 12-6 lead.

Feeling their Premiership hopes slipping away, the favoured Dragons were able to claw their way back.  With the score locked at 12-12 in the closing minutes of the game, St George’s Jamie Soward kicked a field goal to put the team up by one point.  It was the last scoring play of the game and it was all the Dragons needed to lock their place in the Grand Finals.
